Corfu
We weren’t expecting to be in Greece this year, but we sure are glad to be here! The island the Greeks call Kerkyra sits in the Ionian Sea, and is the northwestern frontier of Greece. We dropped anchor in Garitsa Bay in the shadow of the Old Venetian Fort that is perched up on the promontory on the east of the island of Corfu.
The Old Town of Corfu city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its architecture is strongly influenced by the Venetians , after being under their rule for so long. Narrow cobblestone paths wind through the town, and trademark arches separate small and ancient side streets. A fitting welcome given we had just made a beeline all the way from Venice.
We spent our days and nights marvelling at the sights of Corfu city. We soaked up the holiday atmosphere while perusing shops in laneways. We sampled local produce from the restaurants and bistros that abound this city. We rode the tourist train with the kids, and took them to the playground on the hill every day. We met up with yachting friends, both new and old. We swam in the bright blue waters of the bay. And we patted ourselves on the back for making it this far. How exciting it was to now be in Greece!
