Ceremonies

Sailors are a superstitious bunch. Throughout history they have performed launching ceremonies, in part to appeal for good fortune and the safety of each new vessel. And so, on a sunny Saturday afternoon we held a little naming party on the bow of our new home.

Donned in pirate party hats and with bubbles in hand (apple juice for the kids), we called out to the sea gods to safeguard our family according to ancient custom. And at the kids’ behest, we also christened our dinghy Shelby too!

For thousands of years, we have gone to sea. We have crafted vessels to carry us and we have called them by name. These ships will nurture and care for us through perilous seas, and so we affectionately call them “she.” To them we toast, and ask to celebrate Long Summer and Shelby.

TO THE SAILORS OF OLD! TO LONG SUMMER!

The moods of the sea are many, from tranquil to violent. We ask that this ship be given the strength to carry on. The hulls are strong and she keeps out the pressures of the sea.

TO THE SEA! TO THE SAILORS OF OLD! TO THE SEA!

Today we come to name these ladies, Long Summer and Shelby, and send them to sea to be cared for, and to care for our family. We ask the sailors of old, and the mood of the god that is the sea, to accept Long Summer as her name, to help her through her passages, and allow her to return with her crew safely.

TO THE SEA! TO THE SAILORS BEFORE US! TO LONG SUMMER!

And so, we poured champagne over the bows of Long Summer and Shelby to appease King Neptune. Then indulged in Tarte au Citron on the deck. And, perhaps breaking with tradition a little bit… we played Musical Statues, Balloon Catch and Simon Says with the kids. :)

Welcome to the family, Long Summer and Shelby!
