Sibenik
Where the River Krka flows into the Adriatic Sea sits the city of Šibenik, with a medieval heart that gleams white against the blue waters of the bay.
Architects and archaeologists come here from all over the world to see the Cathedral of St. James, said to be the world’s largest church built completely of stone (without any brick or wooden supports). This UNESCO World Heritage listed site has interlinking stone, so that the cathedral relies entirely on its own weight to stay standing.
Decorating the cathedral are 71 sculptured heads, reputedly eminent citizens of Šibenik. Others say they are the faces of those who refused to stump up cash for the building of the church, forever and spitefully immortalised in the frieze!
We spent an afternoon in this city doing what we love to do the most; wandering her streets and admiring yet another stunning little town along the coastline of Croatia, stopping every now and then in little cafes for a cool drink in the oppressive heat.
