Mljet National Park

After leaving the Elaphiti Islands, we made our way northwest to Mljet and the National Park that covers one third of this island. Due to its lush vegetation, Mljet is the greenest island in Croatia, earning it the nickname “The Green Pearl”.

We spent four days anchored in the sheltered natural bay of Polače. The small village here is dominated by the large walls of a once-grand Roman palace. Secluded bays, rich fauna and pretty villages sit amongst the beautiful greenery of the park.

We spent our days here with our friends from s/v Gambler, m/v Gratitude and s/v Mimpi, lunching in little restaurants with unrivalled sea views. We explored the bays on our kayak, studied the beetles & butterflies, and snorkelled over starfish & sea urchins.

But by far the best thing we did was to hire eBikes and explore the National Park at 25kms per hour! Zipping around on these pedal-assist bikes was so much fun! They made short work of the big hills, and cruising with toddlers and heavy bags in the heat was a breeze. The one family member who has always been firmly anti-bike riding is now a total convert!

We followed the trails to the two salt-water lakes in the centre of the park. (These lakes are actually flooded depressions that are connected to the sea by a channel.) And from here we rode the electric ferry to a small islet tucked away in a quiet corner of the larger lake. Upon the Isle of Saint Mary stands a Benedictine monastery, whose history stretches as far back as 1198.

Mljet National Park is one of just eight here in Croatia, so it was a treat to experience this tranquil forest without the crowds that might normally flock here. It was such a relaxing stay and one that we won’t forget!
