La Rochelle
Since arriving in La Rochelle three weeks ago (and indeed on previous visits) we’ve been struck by the great vibe of this coastal city. With its medieval houses, Renaissance architecture and university atmosphere, La Rochelle is a place that we’re happy to spend a bit of time in. Which is just as well, as it looks like we’ll be here for a while yet!
From our prominent position at the end of the fuel dock in one of Europe’s largest marinas, we have the best vantage point for all the passing traffic. The kids have a blast spotting everything going past our window from jet-skis to windsurfers, beat up old sailboats to new million-dollar yachts, and the local ferry to an occasional Spanish galleon!
And when we’re not on the boat, it’s a pleasant walk along the coastal promenade into town. How lovely it is to be greeted by the harbour towers of the Vieux Port when we pop over to the Central Market to stock up on fresh food. The beautifully maintained architecture houses boutique shops, bars and restaurants. And the children have enjoyed exploring the many museums, parks, beaches, and of course the aquarium!
So, if you don’t mind, we might stay a little longer...
