Fountaine Pajot Factory Tour

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the Foutaine Pajot factory in France this week - something we had hoped to achieve at some point. When purchasing a new boat, this is a must. And as part of the buying process it helps you to really get a sense of how a brand designs and builds their boats. After all, this is not just a large financial purchase to get right - all of our safety relies on that factory!

Whilst over in the UK visiting family we were fortunate enough to coordinate some accommodation at a friend’s place just 1.5hrs from La Rochelle. So, we took full advantage of this, exploring the Cognac and Bordeaux regions - an area that we would soon be spending a lot more time in come next year.

A pleasant drive in the morning took us to the FP factory just outside of La Rochelle, where we were met by our dealer. We were also joined by two other groups who were a lot further down the road than us and picking up their boats this summer!

Unfortunately, due to the substances and materials used in the factory, we had to leave the kids outside (thanks Mum and Dad for babysitting!). They hung out in the manager’s office drawing and eating while we spent time touring the grounds. The tour was extremely insightful, taking us through the raw material, moulding processes, and the different models they have marching through the system. This factory caters for boats up to 50ft. We were so impressed by the organisation, quality control and detailed timing of how these boats get produced. To think our own yacht will be created in the same manner in just a matter of months is pretty incredible.

I must say that I really like their strict options policy! It definitely helps to keep the timeline predictable and on schedule, and ensures that no part of the process is holding up the production line. Especially reassuring was the testing and quality control along the way, giving multiple opportunities to ensure each boat comes off the line as close to flawless as possible.

There were a lot of boats in the yard ready to head to La Rochelle for commissioning. It’s quite rare to see these massive machines up close and out of the water. Just like an iceberg, there is a lot more to a boat than just what is on top of the water!

On solid recommendations following the tour, we headed into La Rochelle for lunch and a self-guided walking tour. What a stunning place full of impressive history and architecture. Being right on the Atlantic produces some very cool maritime views, lovely cafes and quite a homely feel. It’s also home to the biggest marina in Western Europe, so it was certainly not short of all the necessary shops and requirements!

Such an exciting trip, that made our dreams almost tangible!
