Etna Donkey Trekking
The fertile lands at the foothills of Mount Etna are home to a unique experience. Just outside of the town of Linguaglossa we met up with Salvo at his smallholding for an afternoon of donkey trekking!
Salvo’s farm, and the land that surrounds it, truly is a magical place. The volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate here is perfect for growing nutrient rich foods. The ground often rumbles in step with Mother Etna, as it has done for centuries. Broken pieces of ancient Greco-Roman pottery are as common as stones.
We had such a wonderful time zig-zagging through the landscape with these docile and affectionate animals. They loved munching on the wildflowers as we ambled along. They were patient and calm with the children, and allowed us to really appreciate the peace and quiet. We meandered amongst the olive trees, grape vines, pistachio & hazelnut trees, citrus groves and wild fennel… all under the ever-watchful gaze of Mount Etna. It could not have been more relaxing.
Salvo’s family have worked these lands for generations. He shared with us his enthusiasm for life and passion for the Etna region. It gave us insight to the philosophy and culture of a people who choose to live in the shadow of a volcano. Life here is slow and meaningful; it moves in time with the rhythms of the Earth.
The Ragusano donkeys are an endangered breed local to Sicily, and Salvo obviously has a great love and respect for these animals. They are hardy creatures, that were once an important part of country life transporting goods in the region. Today, supporting the guardians of these donkeys helps to ensure their survival, as well as providing a much-needed boost to the local tourism economy. Plus, who doesn’t love an experience that ends with a shot of limoncello?!
