Porto Kagio

This tiny place is the last port before the southernmost tip of continental Greece, so few people ever make it down here. It is so remote that until recent years many villages in this area could be reached only by sea.

 
 

This peninsula was once a place of worship for Poseidon. For centuries, captains sailing past the nearby Cape Tainaron stopped to pay their tributes to the mighty God of the Sea. And it is said that the pirates from this region were notorious throughout Europe for their excellent sailing skills. It was rather fitting then that this was our last stop on the mainland before heading over to the islands of the Aegean Sea. 

The high barren hills, stone tower houses, indented bays and dramatic views create a landscape different to any other part of Greece. No wonder it was once thought to be one of the Gateways to Hades, where the deceased entered the Underworld. And we did indeed feel like we were about to jump off from the end of the world…
